Known as Territorio de Zaguates, the Land of the Strays is a volunteer-run, no kill animal shelter that is basically a paradise for dogs (and dog lovers).
The shelter, where over 900 stray dogs run free on rolling green hills, refuses to let mixed-breed dogs be looked upon as inferior, working to find their pups safe and loving homes. To help them get adopted, Territorio de Zaguates celebrates the one-of-a-kind traits unique to mixed breed dogs. They’ve even had artists draw “new” breeds to represent their dogs, like The Alaskan Collie Fluffyterrier, reports Barkpost.
“When you adopt a mutt, you adopt a unique breed,” reads the billboard and advertisements of the shelter, which has helped challenge public opinion that pure breeds are superior.
While zooming around the scenic Costa Rican landscape, the dogs also enjoy an indoor facility with comfortable bedding, feeding and bathing stations.
We have never wanted anything more than to live among these beautiful dogs in such a majestic landscape.
